7 Things Parents Should Know About Among Us (2023)

This is one of those times where I saw the memes before I saw the game. It is calledBetween usand it's incredibly popular right now. In the last meme war with my 14-year-old son, I was rick-rolled and sussed at the same time. While I'm pretty proud of my geek upbringing, I've also realized that this is probably a good time to meet up with my other geek parents.

7 Things Parents Should Know About Among Us (1)

1. What isBetween us?

Between usIt is a multiplayer game from an independent developer.indoor sloth. It can be played online or in a closed group of friends over Wi-Fi or LAN. Needs 4-10 players to own itcrew members, from one to threecheaterInside You This is the most important part to remember: crew members and impostors. Crew members have to complete various tasks on board their spaceship and find out who the imposters are. Impostors will do anything to sabotage the mission and kill your crew members. When someone finds a body, or a player calls an "emergency meeting" (allowed twice per game), everyone comes together to discuss and vote on who the imposters are. And so it becomes a game of deduction, betrayal and deception.

2. Crew Members vs. Imposters

First thing to note: you don't know if you're a crewmate or an imposter until the game actually starts. Once you know it, it will change the way you play.

crew members: The goal of the crewmates is to complete all their tasks, find the imposter(s) and survive. Seems pretty easy right? Yes, except for the scammer part. Tasks are important because they are part of how the spacecraft works. Now if you find a body, you can report it immediately and start a staff meeting to identify the killer-imposter...ÖAt least you can complete the tasks and hope you're not next. If you get killed, you can still do quests as a ghost, but you won't be able to talk to anyone.

impostor: The gameplay of Imposter is slightly different. They start off with fake quests to blend in with the locals. You can even use these fake tasks to sabotage the ship. He also has an additional "Air Vent" ability, allowing him to travel faster through the spaceship through the vents. Of course, if someone notices you, they will know that you are a scammer. Of course, you can kill any witness, but that leads to the next cheat rule: there is a cooldown timer between kills. Use your skills wisely because you must kill everyone (either directly or indirectly if they are falsely accused of being imposters).

3. esBetween usa new game?

No, it was released in 2018 and is currently experiencing a surge in popularity. In accordance withShrinkage Tracker,Between usis the second most watched game, behindLeague of Legends, which is no real surprise. What's surprising is how it turned outfourteen daysdropped to fourth place (behindModern Call of War weapons). It's been picked up by some popular streamers, and let's face it: cheating is always a popular sport. Add to that the need to socialize during a pandemic when we shouldn't be socializing, and you have the perfect breeding ground for a game likeBetween us.

4. Is it suitable for children?

Between usIt's very popular with teenagers. In 2018, the game received an age rating of 16+ for Strong Violence, but has since changed to an age rating of 9+ for Fantasy Violence and Mild Gore.

To be perfectly honest, the animation is done in a cute, laugh-out-loud style. There was probably more graphic violence in therewar of starsanimated episodes than this game. The most important question to consider is how your child feels about lying and cheating. Some kids just can't handle the level of betrayal that comes with this game; You have to trust your friends not to take cheating personally and not make it personal. While I have no problem with my 14 year old playing this game, I don't think it's a good idea for my 11 year old. The latter is much more literal in its approach to gaming and is less suited to this type of psychological play than real-life behavior.

Between usit is absolutely a personal choice for each parent. Before you unleash them on the spaceship, I highly recommend checking out the game and finding out who your kids would play with. If you are still not sure how your child would feel playingBetween usPlease try another game. A good example would be the board game.antidote, similar in artwork and deduction. If no one turns the tables, they're probably ready to do itBetween us.

5. esBetween usthe cheater?!?

Yes, the fun of it.Between usIt's not the first game of this style. If it sounds familiar, it was inspired byMafia(also known aswerewolf). The game's simple platform creates many similarities to board games and video games:antidotementioned above, along withSecret Hitler,City of Salem, miwinter project.

what he doesBetween usThe art stands out from these other games. The graphics are humorous and light-hearted in a way that eases the pain of betrayal and ensures the game stays in the realm of "FUN".

6. Do the players talk to each other during the game?

It is always good to check before allowing your kids to play multiplayer games online.

Between usIt doesn't have a built-in voice chat feature. Remember that the game was originally developed for mobile gaming. If players start arguing about who the cheater is, they can use the typed chat feature in the game's chat room or a separate voice chat app like Discord. Most players prefer voice chat as it makes it so easy to defend yourself before your crewmates let you out of the airlock. Either way, make sure you and your kids practice cybersecurity. Knowing who they're talking to and how to spot the warning signs when talking to strangers online.

Note: You can turn on "Censorship Chat" in Settings if you're concerned about offending your kids. And there are some explicit usernames that just can't be avoided.

7. Any accessibility issues?

It's a question I've been hearing a lot lately, and one that I'll keep in mind for future games: Are there any accessibility issues that need to be addressed?

All gameplay inBetween usIt can be difficult for players suffering from color blindness. While avatars are based on color recognition, you can manage this with easily distinguishable usernames.

You can also adjust the time to discuss and vote on cheaters, the difficulty of killing other players, multiplayer speed, and visibility within the map. Each of these variables can make the game more equal and therefore more accessible to players of all skill levels.

7 Things Parents Should Know About Among Us (2)

At the moment,Between usis free for iOS and Android and available for about $5.25/AUD$7.50 on Steam. There are additional packs to purchase that give you avatar costumes, mini avatars, and pets. Personally, the enjoyment of the game comes from the friends you play with, not the extra features.

For short and quick games with friends,Between usit can be a lot of fun and super fun. It's also a game I enjoy watching my kids play without gouging out my eyes and ripping off my ears. It's the kind of game we can play on the phone and talk to friends... if they're still talking to us afterwards.
